EX POST FACTO HISTORY
Four energetic individuals tired of the fluff in music, the lack of heart in punk rock anymore, or maybe even just the lack of punk rock! Our mission is simple...we dont care about being cutting edge, or doing anything new and improved. We want to play punk rock the way its always meant to be played. Fast, Unrelenting, and Unforgiving. Bringing everyone together for the circle pit.
Why Ex Post Facto?
Where to start.... I had moved to Portland with my wife and dog in June '04 from Stroudsberg, PA. By sheer dumb luck a very good friend who I hadn't heard from in two or three years calls me in PA about a month before my move back West. Oliver Droppers is his name, whom together with Myself and a pair of cohorts were in a punk rock band (The Basic 4) some eight years earlier in high school. Oli tells me that he's a grad student at PSU, living in Portland and readily volunteers to help the wife and I with our move-in. The summer goes by lazily with Oli and, as is our nature to do, discussing the current state of the punk rock genre and what the hell has happened to it in recent years. As the lengthy summer discussions progressed it became more and more evident to Oliver and myself that we had to make some sort of stab at a re-vitalization of an art form that is very dear to us. By this time it's coming on Fall and we decieded to make an effort in finding a guitarist and drummer with whom to shake the foundations of a scene ruined by sissy Post-Emo Pop Punk and wave upon waves of no-talent Metal-Core fluff. We placed a 'Band-Seeking-Musicians' ad in Kingbanana.com hoping that somewhere within the Portland counter-culture existed a pair of individuals with the drive and guts enough to take up our flag. In the first week that the ad ran one Oscar Johnson repiled saying that what we were offering sounded like a plan he could help exucute. Sure enough, after two months of scouring the landscape for a rehersal studio Oscar was able to find Bongo Fury Studios right in or own backyard of Beaverton. The three of us laid down $180 p/m for a 10'x12' room without having played a single note togther. It didn't matter that we hadn't jammed because what we did have was a joining of minds and of ideals. The three of us shared a common love for music, and a common distaine for what it had become. Oscar, Oliver and Myself then wrote and played together from Novermber '04 until April '05 before joining forces with our fourth component, Jeff Bassett. Having run nothing short of six classifed ads in three seperate publications over 6 months and having passed out hundreds of 'Drummer Wanted' flyers in every music and record shop in the Greater Portland Area were we able to weed out 13 drummers before finding Jeff. A few of the guys we played with were decent human beings. Most were flakes and brush-offs. One was a basketcase idiot-bastard child of a prostitute who wanted to join the band so that he squat in the studio. But our sheer will and determination persisted. Then one day Lady Luck dropped Jeff into our laps and after one practice our hopes began to rise. After the fourth practice it was settled- Ex Post Facto was finally birthed. So why 'Ex Post Facto'. Because here we are 'After The Fact'. A generation and 20 years late. What we have to offer though is nothing short of redemption. A raiseing from the ashes of an art form that shaped and mentored us. A revival of a sound that has been all but lost to a new genertion of kids who get their ideals from a Playstation and the Internet. We're here to play so that what we hold as true and good is not lost forever in the Sea of Bullshit that is American Pop Culture.
